DART Puts the Brakes on Human Trafficking

New Friends New Life joined the Transportation Consortium for Human Trafficking Awareness in their initial meeting on October 2, 2014. This group of transportation leaders seeks cooperation and coordination with social service providers like New Friends New Life to combat and end human trafficking.

Initiated by the Department of Transportation, DART is one of four jurisdictions in the United States joining the Transportation Leaders Against Human Trafficking (TLAHT) and has pledged support for the “Put the Brakes on Human Trafficking” awareness campaign. The goal of this initiative is “to educate our employees and the general public about the pervasiveness of this serious problem in our country,” said Gary Thomas, President/Executive Director of DART.

The campaign will include posting public service announcements at the DART facilities and training the thousands of employees on the red flags and immediate actions needed when presented with a human trafficking victim. New Friends New Life’s Executive Director, Katie Pedigo said, “we are proud to partner with DART and other transit agencies to raise much needed awareness in the transportation industry, the private sector and our community.”
